Spectral Measurement of Photon Emission from Individual Gold Nanoparticles Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

چکیده
The light emission spectra of individual Au nanoparticles induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) have been investigated. Two-dimensional ensembles of tunnel-coupled Au particles were prepared by thermal evaporation onto a native oxide silicon wafer in ultrahigh vacuum (10 – 9 mbar). Our STM measurements show a single peak at photon energy 1.6 eV in the tunneling mode and two peaks at 2.2 eV (connected with the Mie plasmon) and 1.45 eV (a new peak which was not discussed in literature before) in the field emission mode.

Imaging of surface plasmon polariton interference using phase-sensitive photon scanning tunneling microscope
We report the surface plasmon polariton interference, generated via a ‘buried’ gold grating, and imaged using a phase-sensitive Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM). The phase-resolved PSTM measurement unravels the complex surface plasmon polariton interference fields at the gold-air interface.
متن کاملSingle electron tunneling and manipulation of nanoparticles on surfaces at room temperature
This article focuses on surfaces containing nanoparticles and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). These surfaces provide a simple and reliable platform for measurements of single electron tunneling (SET) properties of metal nanoparticles at room temperature. This approach of interfacial chemistry allows for the elimination of lateral motion of the individual nanoparticles during electronic proper...
متن کاملMechanism for photon emission from Au nano-hemispheres induced by scanning tunneling microscopy
The photon emission yield observed in scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM! measurements of Au hemispheroid-decorated thin films is used to elucidate the interaction of tunneling electrons with local surface plasmon modes. The photon emission probability is found to depend on the surface feature size. The agreement of a model calculation with the experimental results demonstrates that inelastic e...

In this review, we describe recent progress made in the study of nanoparticles characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Basic principles of STM measurements and single-electron tunneling phenomena through a single NP are summarized. We highlight the results of electrical and photonic properties on NPs studied by STM and STS. Because nanopar...

The STM-electroluminescence technique is shown to be a valuable tool for characterizing optoelectronic properties and understanding structure-function relationships in heterogeneous or disordered materials on nanometer length scales. The intensity of photon emission induced by tunneling electrons from rough Au films is found to depend on the surface feature size. This size-dependent photon emis...
